Summer lovin’…had me a blast

If your current weather makes a mockery of this statement (pouring, pouring rain as I type this), I want to tell you–it’s summertime and we’re ready for it!

Here at IN College Planning, we’re crazy-busy with Common App Essay camps, guiding our clients through the intimidating process of creating a great college essay. Although summer suggests cookouts, time in the pool, and packing for vacation, here at IN we know that the 104 Days of Summer Vacation (made ya sing it, didn’t I?) can be a great time for doing some of the prep work related to college-planning.

At my house, summer doesn’t really begin until after Summer Nationals, USA Fencing’s final competition of the season. The 5 weeks between the end of school and the start of the tournament are crammed full of fencing/conditioning/bouting/reviewing video and refueling to do it all again the next day. We’ve made a few attempts at PSAT preparation, but most of my daughter’s college planning will begin after July 12th.

Summer’s relatively slower pace offers a terrific opportunity to begin career development work, create a school list, or even produce a number of essays needed for application season. You might also choose to work part-time, or look for a job shadowing opportunity. Because we don’t compete with schoolwork, homework, and a busy sports schedule this time of year, ambitious teens can do a TON of career development work in a relatively short window. It isn’t as fun as a trip to Morocco, but after helping hundreds of teens prepare for college throughout the summer, we’d like to think we’re pretty good at after 11 years!

Our blogs will devote a good bit of summer to helping you make the best use of your days. In the meantime, if you’d like more information, please get in touch–we’re currently welcoming new clients in Class ’22, Class ‘23, and Class ‘24 .
